COVID-19 Response

At Maximum Heights Academy, the health and safety of our students, staff, and families are our top priority. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will regularly provide updates, resources and information on this page.

What is COVID-19/Coronavirus?

COVID-19 is an illness caused by a virus that can be spread from person to person. Although common symptoms appear to develop as a respiratory disease, COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild or no symptoms to severe illness. The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, meaning we all need to take extra health and safety precautions.

• COVID-19 can be spread by coming in close contact (about 6 feet) with someone who has the virus; through droplets spread when an infected person sneezes, coughs or talks; or by touching an object that has the virus on it, and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• The CDC advises folks to stay home as much as possible and practice social distancing, avoiding close contact with others; washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol; cleaning and disinfecting often-touched surfaces or items; and wearing cloth face coverings when in public places
• Everyone is at risk of getting COVID-19, but older adults and folks of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of more severe illness. 

How is Omaha responding?

• Omaha currently does not have a mask mandate in place, but we will be certain to update our families if and when this changes. 
• Omaha Public Schools has recently announced that its first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year will take place entirely remotely. This means school-age students will conduct all of their classes from the safety of their homes. We understand that working parents still need childcare during this uncertain time, and we have openings available. Please see below for MHA’s responses and remote and in-person learning resources. 
• The Douglas County Health Department has an information line that can be reached at 402-444-3400 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week (except holidays). 

Symptoms to look out for

The CDC reports that people with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported, and those symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms, please keep them home and follow CDC and doctor guidelines for how to proceed.

• Fever and/or chills
• Cough
• Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
• Fatigue
• Muscle or body aches
• Headache
• New loss of taste or smell
• Sore throat
• Congestion or runny nose
• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea

Please seek emergency medical care immediately if you or a loved one is exhibiting the following symptoms:

• Trouble breathing
• Persistent pain or pressure in chest
• New confusion
• Inability to wake or stay awake
• Bluish lips or face

COVID-19 testing in Omaha

• COVID-19 testing is available through many options in Omaha, given patients complete the required assessment and reserve an appointment.
• Visit the Douglas County Health Department website for an interactive map and all local testing options based on price, location and more. 

The Maximum Heights Academy Response

• Smaller class sizes to each room (maximum of 15) and same students staying together throughout the day with same teacher
• Staff and children temperatures taken & documented upon arrival
• Parents, children, and staff handwashing upon arrival
• Students and staff frequently washing hands throughout the day
• Contactless check-in
• Only parents are allowed to drop off and pick up children.
• Teachers are wearing face masks throughout the day
• Students encouraged to wear face masks/face shields 
• Deep cleaning several times a day
• Immune boosting foods and drinks added to menu along with germ-killing essential oils in humidifiers in each classroom

Maximum Heights Academy Remote Learning

Maximum Heights Academy has created a remote learning space for our school-agers (available for K-6th grade only) that will not be in school. A teacher, paraprofessional, or tutor will be available to assist children during remote learning and with independent study packets. S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math), Gardening, Y.B.I.’s (Young, Black & Intelligent) unique black history curriculum, and MHA’s Entrepreneurial Kid Kamp will also be included in the program.
